Social Media – What’s The Point?
The rush to build Facebook fan pages and Twitter accounts is something that small businesses may find overwhelming and time consuming. While these social media tools are excellent things to integrate into your marketing strategy, they shouldn’t be the end-all to your marketing plan.
The point of creating a Facebook fan page or Twitter account is to keep your name fresh among your clients and to provide valuable content that directs them to act. That last part is key – valuable content that creates action. You can consistently provide valuable content by pointing users to view your newest blog post, to read about your newest promotion or to engage in an interactive way.
Engaging your audience and keeping communications flowing on both ends is one of the more difficult tasks in social media. An idea to keep things new is to use your Facebook fan page or Twitter feed to give away free things like books, gift cards, discounts, or cash. You’ll find that people will become your referral engine as you become a source for valuable information, discounts, or freebies.
Providing valuable content doesn’t just stop at your own Facebook fan page or twitter feed. To see your fan base grow, you should invest some of your social media time in contributing to other relevant blogs, Facebook pages, and retweeting related posts. Using your expertise, you can shamelessly promote your own page or company by bringing quality comments to other pages and websites. This is a form of fusion marketing, which is essentially finding ways to partner with others as a marketing tool.
Remember, social media is only one part of your marketing plan. Don’t let it keep you from continuing your other marketing strategies.
